We’re partnering with our friends at Studio Piano Nobile to offer a mordant printing workshop at their beautiful space in the Phinney Neighborhood Center!

The Marigolds & Mordants Textile Workshop

Learn how to create beautiful patterns and shades using natural dyes with different mordants. Together we’ll explore techniques for surface patterning and color modification. We’ll practice printing and painting with stencils, stamps, and natural materials. Each student will take home their own reusable stencil, paper and fabric prints, and notebook. Snacks and beverages provided!

Each student will take home their own reusable stencil, paper and fabric prints, and notebook. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

    Beginner friendly, no previous experience required!

    Intro to Natural Dyeing

    September 28, 2024

    9 am - noon

    Humans have been extracting pigment from plants, animals, and fungi for thousands of years. Natural dyeing is a fun way to connect with your environment, expand your garden, utilize food waste, and connect with our shared cultural histories while exploring the range of colors that the natural world can provide.

    This workshop will provide you with the basics of natural dyeing and provide best practices for preparing your fibers. We will explore techniques like eco printing with fresh flowers, mordant painting, and immersion dyeing. Come away with a set of napkins and a silk scarf. 

    All materials and supplies are provided.

    Intro to Fresh Indigo Dyeing

    1 - 4 pm

    Immerse yourself in the world of indigo! Learn about this magical blue dye unlike any other. We will delve into the history and cultivation of this dye plant, learn to make a fresh indigo vat, and play with fresh leaf dyeing to create all shades of blue.

    Come away with a silk scarf and a set of napkins AND bring your own items to dip into the vat. This workshop will also cover basic shibori techniques to create patterns on your fabric.

  • Winter Wreath Workshop

    December 2, 2023

    Brighten your winter days with a beautiful evergreen wreath! You’ll learn how to make your own natural holiday decorations, guided by accomplished flower, herb, and ornamental plant grower Casey Blanchard.

    We’ll provide variety of natural materials from around the farm, and a few other decorative elements, as well as a reusable wreath frame for your fragrant, festive creation.

  • Fall Plant-Based Dye Workshop

    November 18, 2023

    Embrace the fall colors and cozy season by learning a new craft! In this natural dyeing workshop you'll learn by doing, guided by textile and dye enthusiast (and our former farm neighbor) Max Holden.

    We'll provide a variety of flowers and plant materials grown by Max and by us, as well as two pre-mordanted tea towels. You'll have the opportunity to try out a variety of methods, including vat dyeing and ecoprinting.

  • Wild Fermentation with Hadar Iron

    February 10, 2024

    Join us on the farm with Hadar Iron of InFerment Studio onto explore the fundamentals of fermentation in ceramic vessels. In this 3 hour hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to prepare vegetables for fermentation, and pack your own crock full of delicious farm-fresh veggies to ferment at home.
